let me tell you how it all started, what we do, how things have changed, and what we would like to achieve in the future, with a little help from you! i have a few passions in life, my family, martial arts, the outdoors, animals and of course traveling. i love exploring and experiencing new cultures and this is where it all began for me. after many years of travelling asia i had admired it`s culture, beauty and friendly people but there was always one thing that i couldn't ignore and that was the unbelievable poverty that families and children had to endure day in and day out, they were literally starving. they had nowhere to go and no one to turn to, they end up living on the streets, sleeping on the bare concrete in doorways and some hadn't even a piece of cardboard to sleep on! they are the poorest and most unfortunate individuals i have ever come across, they are victims of circumstance, they are not lazy, there just isn`t work for them and there just doesn’t seem to be any help available! people just seem to turn a blind eye. out of sight out of mind! we got the feeling that certain individuals didn't even want us to feed the homeless on the streets, as it made them look bad? but that didn't stop us. it`s not unusual to see a mother and her malnourished kids sleeping on the side walk, some of the kids have nothing but an oversized t-shirt on, and they run around barefoot. the older ones can be found begging for leftovers outside m.c. donald's and other fast food restaurants. god forbid if any of them get sick. it came to the point that i had to do something to help, even if it was only in a small way! i got together with some good friends that i had made in the philippines over the years, to discuss what i could do to help! i told them that i was willing to personally fund a small feeding program to see how it would go. they agreed to help me with the cooking and transportation. i asked them to come up with a small menu off perhaps three different meals that we could use for the feeding, as they knew what foods the filipino people liked best. i asked them to use their local knowledge to find out the poorest areas to have the feeding. we contacted the relevant spokesperson for to organize a feeding at very remote location at ibabao carcar city, and to arrange a date and time for the feeding, plus get a rough estimate of how many people there would be on the day. we then came up with three nutritious meals that we could vary from feeding to feeding and they were chicken with vegetables and rice - bread spaghetti and juice - noodle and pork spring roll. the menu was a great success and everyone enjoyed the food. if i remember properly most of them came back for seconds. to cut a long story short, that was really the beginning of the giving hand cebu food aid project. after that we just continued to search for the other poorest areas to conduct new feedings. we spread our feeding program into many different areas of cebu including perrelos, panrak, riverside, bas and cebu city itself, we were welcomed with open arms in every location except cebu city, as it didn’t say much for those in power, having us feeding the homeless on the streets. we had to do our feeding mostly at night and very discreetly. i try my best to get over to the philippines as much as i can to organize and help out with the feeding project. i continue to fund it myself, even when i am back home in ireland. it is now my mission to build on the project even more and keep it going continually so that we can to help as many of these poor souls as possible. the problem is that what started out as a small feeding project is now continuing to grow day by day. now there are more and more mouths to feed, i try and to raise a little extra money for the project through doing events and challenges, which does help a little. i would personally like to thank all those that have sponsored me, your help is really appreciated, and you can see at any time where your donations are going by following our facebook page. our giving hand cebu food aid project is regularly updated with information video and pictures of all the feedings that you are helping with your support. what i would like to achieve for the giving hand cebu project in the future is to have more feedings on a more regular basis. to reach out to more remote locations, where i know there are families, kids and elderly are struggling to survive from day to day. i know that something as simple as a few nourishing meals a week would be a god send to them, and would make life a little more bearable. to achieve this means more expense, but i think one has to set the bar high. if we don’t try then how can we ever succeed! i believe there is goodness in everyone, and it just takes something to bring it to the surface. if we have no compassion and can’t help our own kind, then what kind of species are we! i know that if those less fortunate than us could have a voice. then they would say a heartfelt thanks to you, thanks again for taking the time to read this article, i hope it shed some light on what we are doing, why we are doing it, and what we would like to achieve in the future with regard to the giving hand cebu food aid project, and these poor unfortunate souls. www.givinghandcebu.com 2015
